The number of international students in the USA rose by 11.5 per cent to 1,057,188 in the 2022/23 academic year, according to an official report.

The Open Doors 2023 Report on International Educational Exchange shows that more than half originated from the top two source countries: China (289,526, 27.4 per cent) and India (268,923, 25.4 per cent). However, while the number of Indian students rose by almost 70,000 year-on-year, the number of students from China declined by just over 500.

Other countries which saw large rises include Nigeria (22.2 per cent, to 17,640), Nepal (27.9 per cent, to 15,090), Bangladesh (28 per cent, to 13,563) and Ghana (31.6 per cent, to 6,468). The report covers students enrolled at higher education institutions, as well as those completing Optional Practical Training (OPT).
