The government of
Canada has announced changes to be made in support of its international students and universities, with a focus on preventing them from becoming victims of fraud.
From December, designated learning institutions in the country (DLIs) will be required to confirm international applicants' letters of acceptance with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This is aimed at preventing the use of fake letters to obtain study permits, a practice that the country has recently investigated.
In addition, a "recognised institution" framework will be established in time for the next academic year, entitling universities that "set a higher standard for services, support and outcomes for international students" to benefits such as faster permit processing for their applicants.
Finally, over the coming months, IRCC will assess the criteria for obtaining a
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), with the goal of adjusting it to fulfil the needs of Canada's national and local job markets.
